Make Yourself Relax

October 10, 2005

I was having lunch with some friends the other day. The conversation got around to stress at work. One of my friends said he needed to make himself relax more. Now, that’s an oxymoron. Relaxation isn’t something to make happen. It’s simply being receptive and allowing things to be however they are in the moment. Perhaps Dr. Wayne Dyer said it best, “Everything in the universe flows. You can’t get ahold of water by clutching it. Let your hand relax and you can experience it.”

What prevents you from relaxing and being in the moment? Is it thoughts and feelings about what you “should” and “shouldn’t” be doing? What beliefs do you have about taking a break, slowing down or “wasting time?” What beliefs do you have about “making things happen?” Relaxation is exquisitely simple. Get out of the doing mode and get into being. Pay attention. Allow yourself to notice what thoughts you have in your mind and what feelings you have in your body. Let the thoughts float on by like clouds. Let any tension dissolve.

EFT is a great relaxation tool, even if you choose to simply tap on the different points. Check out The Relaxation Moment from Dr. Alexander Lees. It’s a breathing technique that uses five of the EFT tapping points. In a hurry? Well, it only takes one minute. Give yourself permission to relax. Clear your mind and body. Taking relaxation breaks during the day takes the brakes off stress and tension. It’s a positive, rejuvenating use of your time. You owe it to your health and wellbeing to find the best ways for you to have relaxing moments. Give your “to do list” a breather.
