Newcomers to EFT often get hung up on what to say in the EFT setup phrase. They wonder if they’re saying the perfect words. In classic EFT, the ending of the phrase is … I deeply and completely accept myself. Sometimes people will say, “But I don’t accept myself.” In these cases, be flexible in finding a phase that resonates and works for you. Andrew Wilkie has some excellent recommendations in this article.

10 Ways To End Your EFT Tapping Set-Up Phrase

By Andrew Wilkie

Want to jumpstart your EFT set-up phrase? The standard ending is.

I deeply and completely accept myself.

I deeply and profoundly accept myself.

There is a slight 3rd variation which is: I love and accept myself even though I have this_______________." I tend not to use it. As it starts off the set-up phrase.

My standard EFT Setup phrase is:

Even though I have this _____________ . I deeply and completely, love, forgive and accept myself.

Why Would You Want Other Endings?

Often somebody using eft, can’t say out loud or to themselves, “I deeply and completely accept myself.” This in itself needs some EFT tapping. Yet, that’s for another post. My favourite 10 set-up endings, which I most regularly use are:

I choose to forgive myself for holding onto this and I choose to forgive those others that may have contributed to this in any way, shape or form.

I choose to be more open about this in the very near future.

I accept all of me anyway.

I am still a good person.

I deeply and completely accept myself somehow.

Even though I don’t accept myself there are parts of me that I accept.

I am open to believing that making healthy changes can be surprisingly easy.

I’m open to letting go of this now.

I choose to be open to the possibility of being free of this X.

I totally love, accept, and forgive myself.

From here you have so many ways and options to end your EFT setup phrase. How are you going to end your set-up phrase?

As I recall, I found out about Joan Feldman’s book, A Frog in My Basement: A Therapist’s Curious Journey into Energy Psychology and the Law of Attraction from a Google Alert I have on EFT. For some reason I was drawn and compelled to buy a copy of the book. I just finished reading it and what a hoot it was. Joan’s book is an entertaining, educational and enlightening story wrapped and packaged in 288 pages. As an added plus, the appendices give you tools for doing EFT and TAT.

Her writing style is funny, witty, and insightful. I smiled as I read along because I can relate to many things she said. She explains the challenges she had going from being a traditional therapist to entering the land of “Woo Woo” and having strange things happen to her while getting amazing results. Imagine a therapy session where your therapist shook, rocked, growled and yawned, not from disinterest, but as part of the energetic healing process. All of this showed up for Joan as she trusted her intuition. She was being called to make a choice between her old beliefs and the new, albeit illogical ones, being presented to her.

One part that especially clicks for every EFT practitioner is chapter nine, “Ungrateful Wretches.” Joan talks about clients getting small miracles from methods like EFT, whereupon the clients gloss over or dismiss giving credit to EFT. This is called the “Apex Effect.”

Joan Feldman willingly takes risks in being very open and genuine about her experiences and adventures into energy psychology and the law of attraction. Her passion radiates from the pages. She sprinkles in a handful of case stories that are compelling and captivating. The book is full of zippy energy, humor and Joan’s unbridled optimism. As Joan says near the end of her book, “My goal is to offer you a new way of thinking to help you be happier and more hopeful and to give you tools for creating a better life.”

Joan Feldman’s book, A Frog in My Basement: A Therapist’s Curious Journey into Energy Psychology and the Law of Attraction, is a charming, heartwarming read. Get the book. I believe you’ll be grateful you did.

When you try to make something happen or force it to happen, you create a block, a resistance. Also, any outcomes are limited to your own expectations. Instead, tap into consciousness. When you are not attached to any outcome, you are open to an infinite number of possibilities. With EFT, just “play” with what shows up in the process. Go with it even if it may not make sense or even seem silly. Intuition isn’t logical. Who know what wonders might occur? If I may give you perhaps the most valuable tip when doing EFT, it’s this.

Often when people say EFT is not working, they tighten up and get fixated. The solution? Let go. In doing EFT, don’t worry about the mechanics of tapping, whether you’re doing it right, or might make a mistake. Rather, simply be in the moment. What do you feel, see, hear, or notice?

It’s about more being than doing. Calm your mind. Take the risk of being open. Go with what you’re aware of right now. Tune into your intuition. Trust any hunches or promptings you get. Be flexible. Change directions. Go with the flow. “Dance” with what shows up. Be gently inquisitive, childlike.

Put your ego aside. Remember, things happen through you, not by you.

I was with a client today who wanted to tap on her phobia which is a fear of heights. I asked her to give me an example of something that if she thought about right now might get up to an 8 or 10 SUDS level. She picked one that had her at 10. It was being on the second level of a shopping mall and looking down. So we started tapping on, “Even though I have this fear of heights …” Turns out that wasn’t what was making her fearful at all. Let me tell you how we got to the real core issue.

Although there was some change, my experience with EFT is that when you get minor shifts you’ll want to dig deeper or come from a different angle. So I asked her what might happen if she got close to the railing at the second level or put her hands on it. She said she would get very nervous. So I asked, “And then what?” She said she might feel an impulse to jump. That feeling changed to being more of a fear of being pushed.

So I asked her again, “And then what?” Almost immediately her face became flush and she said, “I’d die.” The tears flowed. So we tapped on the real core issue:

Even though I have this fear of death, I deeply and completely accept myself.

I also used the Choices method and did a few rounds of EFT tapping. In a few minutes she was down to zero and feeling calm. (Characteristically, she did some yawning.) We did testing to see if she could get herself back up to a high number and it held at a zero. Asking, “And then what” or “And then what might happen,” can often get you to the core issue quickly and gently.

Do you believe in miracles? One definition of a miracle is an effect or extraordinary event in the physical world that is unexplainable by current knowledge. In his wonderful 80-page book, Miracles, author Stuart Wilde says that we are brought up to believe only in those things we can logically understand. What if we might be able to attract miracles in our lives in illogical, intuitive ways? Would you be open to learning a way for that possibility?

Here’s what Stuart Wilde has to say about miracles:

In daily life, your feelings, thoughts and attitudes are your "order form." The Universal Law is the "shipping clerk" waiting for your clear and concise order. So before you decide to change your present conditions you will have be very sure what you want from life. To create something with absolute certainty, you have to establish the feeling within you that it has already happened — that condition you desired is already a part of your life. Since the mind has no way of knowing how the Universal Law is going to deliver your miracle, do not waste time trying to figure it out, just KNOW. As you work towards your miracle, watch for every sign, for every change around you, and you will see the Universal Law communicating with you. The more you trust it, the more the energy is encouraged to reveal itself, and various unusual things begin to occur. Your energy quickens and opportunities pop up like corks on a lake. Your mind’s natural negative alignment will tend to make you think that your miracles are not going to come true. Therefore, in order to achieve complete success, you have to work constantly on your mind’s doubt. In this way you establish a pattern of positive affirmation in your life.

Might you use EFT to open yourself up to the possibility “having” a miracle or miracles? A few years ago, we did an interview with EFT practitioner Phillip Mountrose. Philip is a teacher, Holistic Hypnotherapist, Reiki Master, NLP practitioner, Minister of Holistic Healing, and counselor. In this short video, he’ll teach you a variation of the setup phrases in EFT by including in the setup, “Anything is possible and miracles are happening now.”

www.youtube.com/watch?v=cuEhytCi52s

Set aside any logic or skepticism. Do EFT with his protocol. Be open to “anything is possible and miracles are happening now.”

Before you start, on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 meaning you’re feeling very “good,” and one “not so good,” write down a number indicating how you feel. Now, without thinking about it, intuitively pick a color that you sense will help you feel better. Without thinking or analyzing, choose whatever color comes to mind. You have free rein. Got your color?

Now, sitting in a comfortable position that’s right for you, visualize that color as fully as you can. See it as colored air or light. While visualizing this color, do a round of EFT tapping. Relax and take your time. Go slowly. Imagine the color surrounding your body. Now breath your color it in and out. No words, just tapping, visualizing and sensing. If you’d like to change the form of the color to colored water or a liquid, feel free to do so.

After doing a round of tapping with the color, stop and take a deep breath. Notice if there’s an improvement in how you feel. If so, do another round of tapping using that color to go higher to a positive feeling of 10. If there’s no improvement, use your intuition or information from the color chart below to select a different color. Play with color tapping to see how you might release negative feelings and install valuable ones to positively affect you emotionally and physically.

What if something is bothering you, and you don’t know what it is? You don’t know how to verbalize “it.” You have an uneasy feeling that you can’t quite grasp. One way to dis-cover core issues or things to do EFT with is by using some of the methods of Gestalt Therapy. Gestalt brings you into present moment awareness, particularly about feelings in your body and giving expression to non-verbal movements.

In this short video, you’ll learn some basic ideas about Gestalt therapy.

Here’s how you might use Gestalt therapy to create EFT setup statements. If you’ll slide the video time control to around 3:40, the client, Rob, who is on the right, says when he’s exaggerating his hand movements, “it” feels silly.” In Gestalt therapy, you embrace “it.” and say “I.” For example an EFT setup statement here might be:

“Even though I’m feeling silly, and I’m supposed to be serious, I deeply and completely accept myself anyway.”

As you watch the video further, here are examples of other potential EFT setup statements:

“Even though I’m feeling that I don’t have any control, I deeply and completely accept myself.”

“Even though I’m feeling that I don’t want to be here, I choose to stay and fully experience the present moment.”

“Even though I want to hide from [say whatever you want to hide from here], I deeply and completely accept myself.”

The beauty of Gestalt therapy is that you can discover what you might want to tap on by simply becoming more aware of the present moment. What are you feeling in your body right now? What is your body trying to express? What are your hands and feet doing? Trust in the process that you’ll uncover the gestalt to tap on using EFT.

You’ll find several sites that cover Gestalt therapy via Google, Bing and other search engines. Many of the books on Gestalt therapy are difficult to find because they were published in the seventies. If you want to read an autobiography about the person who is most well known for Gestalt therapy, get In and Out the Garbage Pail which is the story of Frederick “Fritz” Perls.

On page 263 of Helena Fone’s book, Emotional Freedom Technique for Dummies, there’s a cartoon captioned, “I learned EFT from my uncle, and he should know. He was a Morse code operator during World War II.” Spiced with some lighthearted cartoons, large headlines, visual icons, check points, and sidebars, the book’s format and content make Emotional Freedom Technique for Dummies an easy, enjoyable read. It’ll make a valuable addition to your library.

The book was published back in September, 2008 in the UK. Amazon indicated it would be available in the USA in November. I checked in several bookstores and only recently was able to order a copy from Amazon. I suggest getting a copy of Helena’s book because it’s packed with valuable information on EFT for both beginners and people who have been doing EFT for a long time.

The nice thing about the Dummies book series is that the publisher and editors recognize the need for an appealing, reader-friendly format. Research indicates that most readers do not get past page 18 if a book doesn’t grab them, so a lot of books go unread. This one will hold your interest all the way through to the back cover.

Emotional Freedom Technique for Dummies is divided into five parts:

The Path to Emotional Freedom

Venturing Further with EFT

Finding Your Way to Inner Happiness

Applying EFT to Physical Issues

Exploring Other Avenues

You don’t need to read Emotional Freedom Technique for Dummies in a linear fashion. It’s important to dive into the first two parts of the book to get a handle on how to do EFT. After that, go right to whatever issue you might like to do with EFT. Helena covers a wide variety of ways to use EFT. For example, if you want to improve a relationship, there’s a whole chapter on relationships. The book also includes using EFT for phobias, anxieties, trauma, stress, cravings, addictions, healing the body and more. If you’re a parent, you’ll especially appreciate the chapter on using EFT with children.

If you’re a beginner to EFT, you’ll find just what you need:

A brief history of TFT, EFT and energy meridians

The basic routine of EFT and how to do it

How you can use EFT for different emotional and physical issues

Identifying and working with aspects

How to identify your your core issues

Selecting the right EFT setup statements or phrases

What the movie technique and tearless trauma method are

The book also briefly touches upon other therapies that harmonize with EFT. Helena Fone’s Emotional Freedom Technique for Dummies makes a smart reference book for you now and in the future. If you’d also like to know more about Helena Fone visit her Website at http://www.therapy4me.co.uk/.
